While many folks choose to boat during the warmer months, you may be seeking some adventure during the fall and winter instead. The Pacific Northwest doesn’t get quite as cold as some other places, nor do we get much snow, so cold-weather boating is possible. You’ll just have to ensure that you’re prepared for it, because you do still have to figure out how to keep yourself and your passengers warm and safe on your winter boating excursions.

Dress in Layers

One good way to keep warm is to layer up your clothing so that you can add or remove layers as you become too cold or too hot. Start with an insulating base layer of thermal underwear or leggings and a long-sleeved shirt, then add on pants and a light sweater, with a thicker sweater or coat on top of that.

Add Some Warmth to Your Boat

If you’ve got an enclosed cabin with a power source, you could plug in a marine electric heater to keep things nice and toasty. Otherwise, you can bring on thick wool or fleece blankets to keep people cozy. Another option is to carry disposable hand-warmer packets in your pockets.

Keep Yourself Hydrated & Fed

Finally, you’ll want to ensure that your boat has plenty of water (or hot tea or cocoa in a thermos!) and snacks for everyone. Eating can help keep your energy levels up and prevent you from becoming too cold.
