As the weather cools down, boat owners everywhere are getting their boats ready for winter storage. This process isn’t one you want to rush, though, and you definitely don’t want to leave your boat out in the open on her trailer all winter. The harsh weather and low temperatures can damage many parts of your boat if you don’t adequately winterize her first. Your local boat dealer is Active Water Sports, with locations in Beaverton and Oregon City, and we’ve provided some important information below on how to properly store your boat for winter to help you keep your investment protected during the off-season.

Where To Store Her

You’ll first want to figure out where you’re storing your boat. You have a couple of different options for this. You could store your boat under a cover outside after completing the winterization process, although this will leave her vulnerable to the elements, thieves, and any animals that might try to make her their winter home. You could store her in a garage or shed on her trailer if you have sufficient space. You could rent a slip in a marina if winter is reasonably mild and keep her moored at the dock all season. Or you could rent a storage facility where she will be maintained in a secure environment. These options vary in cost and in how secure your boat will be, with outdoor options being less secure and indoor options being more safe. Take some time to consider your options and factor in your available budget before you decide.

Clean Her Up First

Your next step is to clean your boat thoroughly to reduce the chance for mold and mildew to flourish while she’s in storage. Remove all trash, food, and personal belongings from your boat. Take fishing and watersports equipment off and store it elsewhere. Then, sweep your deck, wipe down all interior surfaces, and wash the exterior of your boat to get off any saltwater residue, algae, sand, or other debris. Let her dry thoroughly before you cover or store her. You’ll also want to check your boat for any signs of damage that need to be repaired now as you clean her up.

Change Her Oil

Regardless of whether or not it’s time for your boat’s regular oil change, you’ll want to change her oil and the oil filter before you store her to prevent corrosion. Leaving in old oil can do real damage, so make sure you thoroughly drain the old oil and replace it with a fresh, clean batch.

Invest In A Boat Cover

A boat cover might not be imperative if you’re storing your boat indoors, but it’s still nice to have to protect your boat from dust and debris. Having a well-fitting, weather-resistant cover is an absolute must if you’re storing your boat outdoors. A cover protects your boat from damage and weather, which helps to extend your boat’s life and keep her in good condition.

Flush Her Cooling System

Finally, you’ll want to flush your boat’s cooling system before you store her. Drain the coolant and fill it up with antifreeze, but check out your owner’s manual to see what the dilution recommendations are first. While temperatures fluctuate over the course of the winter, the antifreeze will prevent your internal gears and tanks from freezing, sparing you from costly repairs come spring.
